Lenny Conundrum - Round #457

Archie the Acara goes to Brightvale market and purchases his two favourite fruits in all of Neopia: Grenannas and Strypedillos. Since Archie is a frequent customer, he is given a discount and able to purchase 25 Grenannas and 5 Strypedillos for a total of 1250 NP. After getting home, Archie wanted to know just how many Neopoints he saved at the market that day. If the total of 25 Grenannas cost 1000 NP more than the total of 5 Strypedillos, how many Neopoints did he pay for one single Strypedillo?

I think it's 25. 50 is for the other fruit
1 reply · active 668 weeks ago
I got 50.
25 x + 5y = 1250

25 x = 1000+ 5y

1000+5y+5y = 1250

10y = 250

y = 25

Wouldn't it be:

5y = 1250-1000
5y = 250
y = 50?
1 reply · active 667 weeks ago
25x + 5y = 1250 also 25x = 5y + 1000

Solve for Y in one equation, so in the second one, divide by 5, and then subtract 250 to get:

5x - 250 = y

Subs***ute y in the first equation, since we know what y equals...so the first equation is:

25x + 5(5x - 250) = 1250
25x + 25x - 1000 = 1250
50x = 2250
x = 45

So now we have x, solve for y by putting it back into the other equation.

25(45) = 5y + 1000
1125 = 5y + 1000
125 = 5y
25 = y

The answer is 25....broken down step by step.

The answer is 25 :)
Yep I agree with Jenn's theory...
Easier step:
1250-100=250
250/2=125
125/5=25
you're making this WAY harder than it is. and BTW, Math for Dummies, maybe you should have learned to spell in Elementary School. Just sayin.
250/2=125

Why are you dividing it by two? Shouldn't it be 250 / 5 to get the price?
1 reply · active 667 weeks ago
it's 25

just subs***ute the 25 thingies and the 5 thatsies for x-es
you know the 25 thingies cost 1000 more then the 5 thatsies
so you got x +( x + 1000) = 1250
that will make 2x = 250
so x = 125

the 25 thingies will cost you x+1000 so 1125 in total or 45 each
the 5 thatsies will cost you x so 125 in total or 25 each

You know what's weird? How EASY this was. I feel like it is a trick question of some kind, but I can't figure out how.... It was just way too easy! A third grader could do this problem!
4 replies · active 667 weeks ago
i almost would rather a harder one. with this one being so easy, its almost not worth it plus no challenge to it at all. everyone gets so little nps at the end of the compe***ion.

New lenny conundrum is Two Hundred Fifty-Six Thousand

40X40=1600 square metres
0.5X0.5=1 square metres
80 metres tall, one brick is 0.5m tall. 1600X80/0.5=256000, it says right out the number in words. Answer is Two Hundred Fifty-Six Thousand.
2 replies · active 666 weeks ago
Hmm or would is just be the walls.. in which cause it would be 160X80/0.5 which would be Twenty-Five thousand six hundred
corners overlap
1 reply · active 666 weeks ago
I think...your math is flawed. But then I'm no hotshot at math either. Them numbuhz.
1 reply · active 665 weeks ago
4 walls with an area of 40x80 each. 40*80=3200

each brick has an area of .5*.5 which is .25

3200/.25=12800

12800*4=51200
1 reply · active 666 weeks ago
they way i did it was, if you consider first just 1 layer of bricks on the bottom, you have a 40 by 40 square. if you take into account the thickness of the bricks, you have an inner perimeter of 39 by 39 meters. if you remove the area of overlap at the corners, which account for 1 brick each, you are left with four 39 meter sections. With the bricks being .5 meter each, it takes 78 bricks to cover a 39' wall section. this, multiplied by 4, is 312 bricks. add in the 4 bricks from the corners and you have 316 bricks per layer.

now, since the house is 80 meters tall, and a brick is only 0.5 meters high, it takes 160 layers of bricks to go up 80 meters. 160*316 = 50560 bricks.

since it is required to be written out: fifty thousand five hundred sixty.
3 replies · active 665 weeks ago
But they only give 2 dimensions, so the thickness of the bricks cant be accurately determined. So are we to assume that the thickness is of negligible measurement or of .5?
fifty thousand five hundred sixty.
51200
settle it- 50560 or 51200?
1 reply · active 665 weeks ago
50560

you have 2 bricks per meter, so 80 bricks length for one wall, another 80 bricks lenght for the wall opposite that
for the final 2 walls you have 39 meters left to fill up so those take 78 bricks per wall

Making it ((80*2) + (78*2)) * 180 = 50560
