Lenny Conundrum - Round #400

Conundrum Lenny went for a walk down a dirt path toward Meri Acres Farm. Almost immediately after he started walking, he saw a number written in the dirt: "84".
A few feet later, he saw a second number: "134".
Then another: "218".
As he continued to walk, he came across even more numbers: 296, 380, 429, 468, 551, 635, 684, 734, 788, 868, and 984.
He decided to keep walking. It turns out, there were a total of exactly four hundred numbers written in the dirt. A couple of them were repeated numbers, but most of them were unique.
What was the 400th number? Please submit only a number as your answer, do not include any punctuation, and submit only the answer with no other information.

  1. Possibly 2, thats all the diffrences even between the diffrences.

    ReplyDelete
  2. What? I don't understand what you said at all. I don't get 2 anywhere when I subtract things.

    ReplyDelete
  3. It's a series, guys.
Look at the first 3 terms and look at them.
    134 - 84 = 50
    218 - 134 = 84
The common difference to it is 134. Now you only need to find the 400th term. But there's a trick to it and I'm not budging.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Trolling around, aren't you. Ignore the above statement. It leads nowhere.

    ReplyDelete
  5. 50, 84, 78, 84, 49, 39, 83, 84, 49, 50, 55, 76

Is the differencse between them all, dunno if its relevant but 84 pops up a couple of times

    ReplyDelete
  6. Yeah, I saw that. Furthermore, two of the three times it pops up it's followed by 49. I haven't gotten any further than that, though.

Furthermore, your last numbers are wrong. It goes 49, 50, 54, 80, 116

    9, 17, 3, 18, 13, 6, 45, 33

    8, 14, 15, 5, 7, 39, 12

    3, 23, 24

    20, 1

  8. Ah that makes the above table of numbers incorrect then!! that was a table of all the differences to the last posiible factor to see if there was any pattern, but now ignore as its wrong :P

    ReplyDelete
  9. what is the 400th number

    ReplyDelete
  10. We keep it a secret to annoy you.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Is there any way to contact the owner of this blog? I need them to check my answer.

    ReplyDelete
  12. You could post it and your reasons and we could do it. I mean, he's just going to post it if you're right anyway...

    ReplyDelete
  13. yes please put down an answer

    ReplyDelete
  14. You could just post the answer if you wish, and if the others agree, Ill update the first post.
If you just want to personally contact me and discuss it, you can certainly add me on msn :

    terson@live.com

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anybody any good at programming? I've figured it out and want some help getting the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Or not. I'm just full of fail right now. Ignore that last post. I haven't figured out anything. Man, I wish I could delete that.

    ReplyDelete
  17. haha.
This one really has got me stumped.
    Ill update you guys soon.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Could it be the id number of a shopkeeper?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Most likely not.
My hunch is that it is related to Neopets somehow, in particular Meridell.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The numbers in the list keep getting higher which leads to wrong conclusions because it says "A couple of them were repeated numbers". Something else has to be going on besides differences or adding on to each other.

    ReplyDelete
  21. What about putting the numbers in a triangular form?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since it repeats twice, could we assume that the line's formula may be a quadratic equation?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Could it be the answer is just 400? Lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. i think this week will be a bust for all haha o gee

    ReplyDelete
  25. do you think there is a connection between LC 100, 200 and 300?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Any answer then??

    ReplyDelete
  27. I've still not got it... my desk is covered in paper, I've been trying to work out a formula but so far nothing's worked :/

    ReplyDelete
  28. well... listen to me on this one... but if you look, instead of there being 'the first 200 people to answer...' its the first 400, and instead of 'wins 2,000,000' its 4,000,000. I think the answer is 400

    ReplyDelete
  29. Every week it is 'First 200 get an item and everyone gets a piece of the 2,000,000'. Is it 200 every week?

    ReplyDelete
  30. yes, its 200 and 2 million every week, but not this week

    ReplyDelete
  31. answer is 400 then

    ReplyDelete
  32. beast... i was right!

    ReplyDelete
  33. -back to serious thoughts-

    ReplyDelete
  34. It is said in the neoboards that excel can be use for this.. Any idea?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I suppose it could, but it also says in the Neoboards that neopets never require you to use an external program. It might help, but I've tried it and I'm still getting nada!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Many of us have been banging our heads on the wall.. LOL ^^

    ReplyDelete
  37. i still think its 400

    ReplyDelete
  38. yay.. someone agrees with me!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Did you actually get 400 from your working or are you just guessing?

    ReplyDelete
  40. i don't think it's 400... they're just emphasizing 400 because it's the 400th LC... nothing to do with answer i believe. and they're giving away more this week because of the celebration. then again im not sure of anything because i have no clue.

    ReplyDelete
  41. we'll find out next week

    ReplyDelete
  42. i am still going with 400... but the numbers DO keep going up.. so you think it could maybe 4 million?--- WAIT! THE SPECIAL PRIZE IN THE NEWS SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT NOT REACHING A GOAL OF 5 MILLION THEN THERE IS NO PRIZE! YOU THINK THAT MIGHT BE IT?!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  43. The numbers DON'T KEEP GOING UP. Remember that it says that some numbers are repeated, so at some point, the numbers come back down.

Also, for the record, normally 250 people, not 200 people, win the item/avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  44. the goal of 5 million references the negg hunt...

    ReplyDelete
  45. well, when I just put the numbers in a calculator to get an equation and then graph it, the 400th number is 19128, but that's with no repeating numbers in the pattern, and it says there were some repeated numbers...

    ReplyDelete
  46. Highly doubt it's as easy as 1 2 3, so It won't be 400. If it is, then LOL.

Since there have to repeated numbers, like someone has already stated the numbers must hit a specific number, then drop back down. That's seem like the only logical answer.

I was previously thinking that it may be related to Neopets, but this may just be a math problem after all.

I also don't think there is any co-relation with the older LC/MP.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Disregard my last comment about not having any relation with older LC's haha.

    Here's a clue for everyone :

The first conundrum was released on the 84th day of the year (March 23rd, 2001). This is also the reason for the numbers repeating.
Now, I am unsure as to where the second number comes into play (134).

But by my calculation, the 400th LC was released on April 27th, 2001.
Meaning the answer would be 117 (Since that is how many days that have passed within the year).

Maybe the 84 is just a fluke, but let me know what you guys think.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Nvm, added it wrong. It's 82.
But based off what the others have said on the boards who have figured it out, it may just have something to do with the older LC's.

    ReplyDelete
  49. What day of the week are the lenny conumdrums posted? (if they come once a week)

    ReplyDelete
  50. They come out every Wednesday.

And, maybe, since it's the 117th day of the year, and the 400th Lenny Conundrum, you multiply 117 and 4 together?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Maybe, but by multiplying you wouldn't get any repeats :/?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Sure you would. the answer would come out 468, which IS a repeat.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Hmm, I think this is more than a math problem. Anybody can answer a math problem.. I think this is a Neopets related riddle.

    ReplyDelete
  54. try the letters

    ReplyDelete
  55. I used a graphing calculator and 1-Var Stats, I think I got something.

    Med=509.5
Multiply by 4 (for the 400th LC)
    You get 2038.

    Just an idea.

Also, just throwing this out there, these numbers remind me of TFR Shhhhhhh! step with the books and their numbers.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Just saying, I have no idea how to solve this week's conundrum, but I have this feeling that it has to do with the number 4. I mean, the 400th lenny conundrum, 400 numbers, and all of the prizes have fours with them! The number, I think, might be 444!

    ReplyDelete
  57. okay, probably not.

    ReplyDelete
  58. 84 5+9+7+8+20+25+6+15+21+18+134

    134 15+14+5+8+21+14+4+18+5+4+20+8+9+18+20+25+6+15+21+18=268/2=134

    218 20+23+15+8+21+14+4+18+5+4+5+9+7+8+20+5+5+14=205

    296 20+23+15+8+21+14+4+18+5+4+14+9+14+5+20+25+19+9+24=271

    i need help

    ReplyDelete
  59. hmmm...this one is hard..i thought as this was th 400th puzzle and 400 numbers..
is there anything with numbers at meridell??
if u divide the numbers into 3 digits, the first digit repeats then doesn't and starts again..

    ReplyDelete
  60. Why couldnt the answer just be 400? But also dunno if this has anything to do with it but for pick your own it cost 400 np to do it....

    ReplyDelete
  61. Could it have to do with Guess the Weight of the Marrow?

I even have my dad looking for answers, cause I want to win at least one of the LC's, and he's found some numbers.
The numbers he found are 29000 and 320000.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Whoops, 32000.
Went one zero too far. xD

    ReplyDelete
  63. How did he arrive at those figures?

    ReplyDelete
  64. sorry guys, the answer was posted yesterday on neofact.org... probably too late for you to get the prize but the answer was calculated to be 33098... good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  65. The domain name you have requested isn't available
It has been reserved on gandi.net and parked as unused
    Sure.

    ReplyDelete
  66. and where is this neofact.org webpage now? how did you end up with 33098? hmmmmmmm i smell trolls

    ReplyDelete
  67. Trolololololololololol.
Also starting to believe that anyone who said they got it on the boards, are bs'ing too.
If you just going to assume answers, please have some proof to back it up.

    ReplyDelete
  68. i still think its 400....

    ReplyDelete
  69. i put 400 hundred we will see the answer next week i guess

    ReplyDelete
  70. u know the only thing i don't like about the conundrum is that the answer is usually simple and it makes u feel like an idiot for not seeing it (sigh)

    ReplyDelete
  71. was told it has to do with neopets and that it takes a few hours to gather the information to solve it

    ReplyDelete
  72. Well the fact that everything is 400 has to do with the fact that this is the 400th lenny conundrum. It may just be a coincidence that the price for pick your own (in Meri Acres Farm, the place the lenny was going) is 400. :P I don't know, 400 seems kind of stupid but I agree with your logic and I say either study mathematic formulas till you get it or go with your gut and guess what you think it could be.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I just went with 400 :p

    ReplyDelete
  74. Buy Neopoints:
I dunno how he came up with the #'s; He was on his laptop while I did my own comp.

But if he doesn't have a for sure answer today, I might just try 400 myself. xD

    ReplyDelete
  75. If you look at LC #300, it's also a pretty complicated math equation, and a LOT of people guessed just guessed 300. If you look at the answer, you will see that they were wrong. Then look at LC #301, and the answer to that.

...I'm almost 99% sure that the answer would NOT be 400.

    ReplyDelete
  76. ^ +1 internetz to you xD

    ReplyDelete
  77. 2038

    509.5 (median) x 4 = 2038

    :| Thats my guess.

    ReplyDelete
  78. That has nothing to do with previous LCs.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I wonder if the results from previous LC's could do with it..? How many of the previous answers repeat?

P.S. This is the Anonymous who posted about her dad. xD

    ReplyDelete
  80. From LC's 397 and 398, there are two numbers that are rather simular: 2626 and 2646.
I wonder if it could be 2666 this time...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Don't think it's 2666.
I'm pretty sure when the answer gets released, we're all going to feel stupid. Im more than sure, we're over-thinking this.

    ReplyDelete
  82. 134 - 84 = 50
    218 - 134 = 84
    50 + 84 = 134
    134 + 84 = 218

Keep going like this to find a pattern. Don't know if anyone has posted this yet... but I think im on to something.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Yea I agree Neopoints, never know the awnser might just be 400 lol =P It never said the numbers went up or down or were even or odd , It said the first number he found was 84 never said it was the first number in the dirt. They are trying to confuse the hell out of everyone to make them work at it XD

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would like to know the answer on Wednesday haha and see what all our reaction will be :P

    ReplyDelete
  85. Been working on this Lenny off and on since it's release and I have a theory.

What if it's word count from all the past Lennys based on one that had exactly 400 words in it.
So if the Lenny started with the word "What", you would need to find how many times "what" occurred in all the lennys. It would give mostly unique numbers but potentially some repeats.

I'm just trying to find a lenny with exactly 400 words in the question right now.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Mom's found something too...She just looked and found something today.

The first #'s in each go in "1,2,3" order, and some repeat while still going in order, possibly being the "some are unique" part of the puzzle.
Maybe it goes something like that..?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Anonymous after Neopoints:

    That seem like something, yes!
But what would we do after that?
Since I'm no math wiz (that was my worst ever subject in school) I would need major help on that.

Lol, I'm too scared to submit 400 as an answer...I really want to win the LC for once.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Well it could be 400 but im not quite sure I could be wrong but a lot of the words used in the problem has 4 letters.... but I doubt that really has anything to do with it. I cant wait to see the answer.

    ReplyDelete
  89. *like I mean the wording of the problem could be something in it because were probably just over thinking it X)

    ReplyDelete
  90. Highly against the "400" answer. There's no logic behind it.

The problem with this question, is they didn't specify enough. There can be alot of answers.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Solver:

Yeah, that's my problem. Even my mom looked at one of the questions (she would play games on one user, my main) and she had no idea what they were talking about.
This is why I STILL don't have the LC avatar...It's too flipping hard for me to figure out! Even my oldest (which was also my previous main) account doesn't have the avatar.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Lol, guess no one found anything yet?
Or is it just my computer not refreshing entirely?

I can't even attempt to figure it out, just cause I never understand what the puzzle's going at; Even with the lettered ones, it's too hard for me.

    ReplyDelete
  93. After tons of work on excel manipulating the numbers, my most sound conjecture is that the answer is divisible by a number with 2 digits that sum to 13. The reasoning behind this was primarily from the factors of the numbers given. The answer itself may have 5 digits that sum to 19. I'm still going to look for more patterns though. I much favor the idea that the numbers presented are only members in a set of 1, 2, and 3 digits numbers: making my current most likely answer invalid.

I'll pass around my actual numbers after a little bit more work, I don't want to guide people to look into my when I myself don't support it fully.

    ReplyDelete
  94. maybe its 2011. The year of the 400th conundrum.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with word count... the first LC had exacatly 84 words in it, if you count the two words "Round 1". The current LC has 126 words in the question - 3/2 of 84. Furthermore, the number seems to be increasing by steps of around 30 to 80, which is where most LC questions tend to lie in terms of word count. But I've spent literally hours staring at the word counts and never seen a pattern, though...

    ReplyDelete
  96. The first sentences (before the numbers) have exactly 125 letters.
(I think I'm shooting in the dark here.)
Maybe it has something to do with him walking DOWN?

    ReplyDelete
  97. I tried the solution for #84... didn't work either.

    ReplyDelete
  98. i think its 400.... 4000000 np prize
prize for the first 400 correct entries
    400 th number
    400th lenny conundrum
    what do you think?

    ReplyDelete
  99. No, I don't think it's 400 either. It's probably 4mil and 400 correct answers because it's the 400th LC. But 400th number hm....need to think about that a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Lol, this sounds stupid, but how many 0's are in 4mil? xD

I'm thinking of 4mil myself, just since I dunno anything else.

    ReplyDelete
  101. I wonder if the fact that none of the numbers are prime has anything to do with it?

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm not sure if there's any relation or if it's just coincidence, but as the other "word anonymous" person mentioned, there are 126 words in the Lenny and Meri Acres Farm is the 126th Neopedia article.

Unfortunately, there are only 255 articles in Neopedia.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Do you think that they said Conundrum Lenny instead of Lenny Conundrum for a puzzle related reason.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Last (10:49 post) Anonymous:
I think it's because he's the Lenny for the Conundrum. Otherwise, TNT would be saying that the GAME was walking, not the character.
So I highly doubt that they said that for the puzzle.

    ReplyDelete
  105. I went ahead and tried 4mil.

Thank you for your solutions, guys!

Even if we don't get it, at least we tried, right? x3

    ReplyDelete
  106. 296-134+218=380.

I doubt that's coincidental. I can't figure out what the pattern is, though

    ReplyDelete
  107. I keep doing this annoying thing where I think something is important and then realized I should have already known it.

    294+84=380
    84=218-134

    ergo
    296+218-134=380

Maybe seeing it this way makes the pattern more apparent? I hope so.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I just though I was on to something, but I don't think it works. I will show you any ways: starting at the second number, the first number of each number goes in a 1 2 pattern like 1** 2** 2** 3** 4** 4** 5** 6** 6** but it stops after 6 cause it goes 6** 6** 7** 7** so I guess it does not work.

    ReplyDelete
  109. You see what I'm saying?

    ReplyDelete
  110. Not sure what your trying to get at really :/

    ReplyDelete
  111. well, whatever, i mean at this point no one will get prizes, i went ahead and guessed 2038 (see above posts), hope its right.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Well apparently, some people stated on the boards that they have gotten the pattern. But not sure if they are accurate. I'm stuck myself. Sequences and series = totally bad at them.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I cant get this either.. I usually can. I dont get it. But, maybe the answer is ... 4? I see alot of 4s is all. 4 mil seems too random. 400 sounds possible, yeah. So, Idunno. I have no clue what to do here. Also, 2038 sounds right...

    ReplyDelete
  114. thank you.. someone thinks my 400 could possible!

    ReplyDelete
  115. GO WORD COUNT the first lenny conundrum it IS 84!!!!!!!! if you include it all
and the next one is 36 pretty close to 34 if u say dont count the answer for that one
and the next one is 18 if you dont cont the question

there seams to be a pattern emerging
cant explain the next one yet

    ReplyDelete
  116. a certian section of it is 37 then times it by 8?

    ReplyDelete
  117. dddddddddduuuuuuuuuuuuuudddddddddddddeeeeeeeee.... its 400.....

    ReplyDelete
  118. y would it be 400
    more likely to be 40,000

    ReplyDelete
  119. when i keep working it out, the number 162 keeps popping up... it might just be a coincidence though...

    ReplyDelete
  120. 50 84 78 84 49 39 83 84 49 50 54 80 116

Those are the differences between the numbers.
Eg. The difference between the first two numbers (134 & 84 = 50) and so on.
My guess is that when it states there are "repeating numbers" is that it means the differences are repeating (Note how 84 pops up alot). I dont know if it means anything but I thought Id point it out. Very tired atm.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Also the set numbers are rising, never once deflating. So there would be a higher chance of the answer being around 4000, but very unlikely that it's 400.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Wednesday today, we'll find out today what the answer is.
I can personally say, this has been the hardest puzzle to date.

    ReplyDelete
  123. This puzzle has been extremely hard for me. I still don't have the answer. However, probably half a dozen or more people stated that they solved it on the Games board, and for some, they figured it out in 5 or 10 minutes. (Some made an error in the final calculation, but that's kind of trivial.) Why the puzzle was so easy for some, and hard for others, I don't know...

    ReplyDelete
  124. I wonder what was relevant in this puzzle: the prize? Meri Acres Farm?

When I switched languages, some of the languages stated that the prize was "The Story of Lenny Conundrum".????

Crazy thing I tried: I wondered if some of the solvers were using an old version of Internet Explorer, and forced my Mac to look at things in IE 6.0 mode.

I looked to see if the puzzle numbers in the table at the bottom could somehow make a pattern, but of course, that didn't make any sense. Desperate times... Puzzle 55 is no longer there, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Thought I might be on to something when I saw one of the very old stock market values... sheesh... Nobody could have solved that in 5 minutes!

I looked at past puzzles. Revisited some of the source code ones. Looked at spelled out numbers and numbers listed in pictures instead of easily searched terms... Nothing, although I probably could have looked at this in more depth.

Looked at numbers upside down. Looked at them the way that Conundrum Lenny would have seen them, with the smallest number at the bottom.

  125. "The set numbers are rising, never once deflating."

Don't forget, though: part of the problem stated that some of the numbers were repeats. Whether this means that the numbers started going back down again or that some of the numbers just stayed the same (i.e., increased by zero), only the solvers know right now.

  126. Look at the first letter of each lenny conundrum answer since number 1.
Get the ascii character code of that letter.

Answer 1 is: The Blue Nimmo...the ascii char code of T is 84
    Answer 2 is: 200 pounds...the ascii char code of 2 is 50 (84+50=134)
Answer 3 is: Thirty Four...the ascii char code of T is 84 (134+84=218)

After adding answers 1-399, the total is 25404.

We know the first letter of the 400th answer will be a '2', so add 50 to 25404 = 25454

    Answer was 25454

    11 people got it right.

  127. 2 isnt a letter.

  128. But it says some numbers repeat. With that strategy they only go up.

  129. The ASCII numbers may repeat any time the first character in an answer repeats (i.e. if two answers begin with "The...", the ASCII number for T would be the same for both).

I would be interested to see how honest TNT was about saying "a couple of them" repeat but most were unique. Only 26 letters in the alphabet (52 possibilities when you consider upper and lower case), 10 possible digits, maybe a handful of special characters. There were 399 characters total. All characters would have to have been used at least 5-6 times to get to 399.

  130. The increments repeat, but they're added to the previous total.

The only times they didn't go up were for things like puzzle 55 (was gibberish and isn't even listed) and 392.
