Lenny Conundrum - Round #406

Suppose there was a place in Neopia where one could get free jelly. We know of no such place, and surely it doesn't really exist, but just for fun, let's pretend it's real. While you only get one jelly per day through the rest of the year, this hypothetical jelly-obtaining place has special rules for the Month of Relaxing. Mondays, you get twice as many jellies as the previous day. Tuesdays, you get four more jellies than the previous Tuesday. Wednesdays, you get three jellies. Thursdays, you get the number of jellies that you've already obtained during the month. Fridays, you get eleven jellies for the first Friday, twice that for the second Friday, etc., Saturdays, you get three times the sum of the previous two days' jellies. And Sunday, you get the average of the previous seven days, rounded up to the nearest integer.
How many jellies can you obtain during the month of Relaxing? Please enter a number with no punctuation or other information, otherwise your answer will be marked wrong!

Answer : 76794
Due to the unclarity of the question, there seems to be more than one answer. Check the comments for the other solutions.

  1. So, who here is good at math?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Ohhh i've done these before. They kill my brain, though O;

    ReplyDelete
  3. month of relaxing is june...30 days in june

june 1st was on a wednesday

    ReplyDelete
  4. i just tried. had 1 number on sunday ;_; i gave up after that :(

    ReplyDelete
  5. my friend said she already did it! DX

    ReplyDelete
  6. so, what's the answer?

    ReplyDelete
  7. she wont tell me of course :(

    ReplyDelete
  8. I wonder if your friend got the same answer I got. By putting it into a spreadsheet, I was able to figure out the math easier.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The question is missing some info, at least to me. To correctly answer, you need to know what day the 1st of the month starts on.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I just tried to work it out and got 76458. I'm not sure it that's right though...

    ReplyDelete
  11. ^That's what I got.

    ReplyDelete
  12. the month had to start on a wednesday, which it does.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Still working it out, anyone else confrim 76458.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So what about the "first" days, like the first monday? Is this just 1 jelly?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Mine was higher, but no idea if it was right.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ok, this is math and I'm not good at this, sorry guys, wish I could help.

    ReplyDelete
  17. ^ I believe it can be assumed that they are talking about the current month which started on a Wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  18. the month starts on a wednesday.

    ReplyDelete
  19. ^ whoa. thats alot of jelly.

    ReplyDelete
  20. What about the first tuesday..."4x more than the last tuesday.." sooooo 1 or 0?

    ReplyDelete
  21. I got 126770 Jellies...Though I may have made a mistake

    ReplyDelete
  22. Tuesdays says four more jellies so its +4. and since the previous tuesday was in the last month, we only got 1 jelly...so for the first tuesday of this month it would be 1+4 = 5 jellies

    ReplyDelete
  23. Tuesdays isn't 4 times, but 4 more than the previous, so the first would be 5.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 76794?? Probably made a few errors since I had to use calculator online.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ohhhh my fault...but how do we know that we did it last tuesday? :P

    ReplyDelete
  26. ^that tuesday isn't in june (month of relaxing), so it's only +4 jellies.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I got 76794... I have to check it again though...

    ReplyDelete
  28. ^ For Tuesday it says 4 more not 4x more so it would be 4+1 for the last Tuesday of the previous month meaning that the first Tuesday is 5. I think.
This is all conjecture on Neopet's rules for this.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm just making the assumption that we are getting jellies everyday and its a continuous thing...though I may be mistaken. B/c sundays are the average of the previous 7 days...would you just use the previous 4 for the first week?

    ReplyDelete
  30. What does "Fridays, you get eleven jellies for the first Friday, twice that for the second Friday, etc." mean? Does that mean 33 or 44 for Fri #3?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I would assume you would do the previous seven days, with one for each day that was in a different month.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I got 85482.

    ReplyDelete
  33. ^ it would be 44 for the third friday. 11 for the first friday, 22 for the second (11 x 2), 44 for the third (22 x 2), etc.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i understood the friday thing to be 2x11 for the second friday, 3x11 for the third friday, 4x11 for the fourth...

    ReplyDelete
  35. For sundays (The second one) It says to average the last 7 days...so go back to what day? Last Sunday too?

    ReplyDelete
  36. that's incorrect, since it states "Fridays, you get eleven jellies for the first Friday, twice THAT for for the second Friday, etc." so whatever your previous number of jellies was on friday, you would multiply it by x2.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Unless it meant twice that, then three times that, then four times that, that being 11.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I got 63,519

    ReplyDelete
  39. i don't think it's 76458 because that's what I got the first time, but that's by just rounding the sunday average, not rounding up, the way it is written, the number on sunday should always be rounded up.

Also I think the fridays is 1x11, 2x11, 3x11, etc....

    ReplyDelete
  40. ^ that was my thinking... I assumed that the "that" was referring to the 11, not the total for friday if that makes sense.

    ReplyDelete
  41. i got 690334

    ReplyDelete
  42. Also I just realized something funny, if neopets really wanted to mess with us, there are lots of answers to this question, it asks how many can you get during the month of relaxing, not the maximum number you can get, so you can get 1 jelly, 2, etc. all the way up to the max... I don't think this is what they want, but it is amusing to think about...

    ReplyDelete
  43. It's purposely written so that either interpretation of Friday could be correct. You'll just have to go with your gut on this one and decide how to calculate that part yourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  44. i got : 3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,160,44,88,9,3,514,33,1641,925,1850,13,3,5493 ... so its all 10986

    ReplyDelete
  45. i got : 3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,160,44,88,9,3,514,33,1641,925,1850,13,3,5493 ... so its all 10986
    -
that second saturday is wrong. it cant be 160 because 22+94 = 116*3 = 348

    ReplyDelete
  46. I got 69944...

    assuming the 1*11, 2*11, 3*11....

and assuming on sundays you average the last SEVEN days, including the previous sunday.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I got 76794 with friday being 11, 22, 33, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  48. ^what your thursdays? I got 77364 (close, someone's got a math mistake somewhere...probably me)

    ReplyDelete
  49. DAMN DAMN DAMN!

I forgot about in the first Sunday, I could have included the days in May also... :( Messed up...

    ReplyDelete
  50. thursdays were 3, 94, 786, 5581, 38397
i used excel, and confident in the math. Not confident in the interpretation of the neopet team's wording though, somewhat ambiguous.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I got 7785
    with
    3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,348,71,142,9,3,783,44,2481,505,1010,13,3,5622,88,17130,3482,6964,17,3,
    38928

    ReplyDelete
  52. Ok I have 3 94 786 but then for my fourth and fifth thursdays I have 5623 and 38682... I will go recheck my math. I'm using excel too.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok, I got 76794 too It was my mistake (on rounding)

    ReplyDelete
  54. its really not that hard i have a 4.0 gpa in college i got 3745Blank for the last number send Evil_elf_666 some money and ill give it to you

    ReplyDelete
  55. I GOT 78144

This is assuming for the first sunday that you're counting all 7 days, ie some 1's in there from the previous month, and fridays being 11x2 22x2 44x2 ect. I've double checked it.
I will now try with fridays just as 11x2 11x3 (but I don't think thats what TNT meant...) be careful when doing thursdays!

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ah, good, my number is then confirmed? Well that was a PITA, I hope I got a trophy...

    ReplyDelete
  57. lol too many numbers floating around..if you said 76794 then yes I got the same thing... I've submitted. now we wait :P

    ReplyDelete
  58. I got 77856... The same as a couple of anonymous above me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. So is the answer 76794?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Carolyn - using your theory I got your answer, so I'm assuming our maths are right, but it will depend on whose interpretation of friday is right! we shall see...

    ReplyDelete
  61. So whats the answer? We have like 10 different ones..

    ReplyDelete
  62. YAY! Thanks anany for confirming my numbers I'm so confused looking up and seeing all this mumbo jumbo. Hence I used my name so I could tell who I was in the mess haha

    By doing fri 11x2 11x3 ect I got 76794

And now to decided which friday rule to go with....

    ReplyDelete
  63. I was the anonymous that initially posted 76794, which was confirmed by another anonymous on friday theory 11,22,33. Problem is, I also agree that Carolyn may be right. So it is up to you to decide whether her interpretation of friday or mine is correct.

    ReplyDelete
  64. remember, the number is rounded up. if is 76453, for example, maybe 76000, or 76500...

    ReplyDelete
  65. No, it isn't rounded up. It only says round up the Sunday avg to the next integer, not to the nearest 10th, 100th, ect.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I finally submitted 78144 on the idea that friday is double the last friday. I'm not sure if I'm right, but I figured if TNT had meant 11x2 11x3 11x4 like some of you are thinking, they would have worded it differently- "twice that for the second friday" makes me think x2. If they meant to x3 for the next fri and x4 for the one after that, they probably would have mentioned it. Thats my theory anyways, good luck all, guess well find out next week!

    ReplyDelete
  67. I submitted mine asap since I want to win the trophy, but I honestly don't know which is right! Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  68. i got 90144

    3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,348,72,144,9,3,786,44,
    2490,507,1014,13,3,5643,88,17193,3495,12990,17,3,
    45072

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm part of the camp that solved it assuming Fridays are 11, 22, 33, 44. When I first read it, I didn't even consider the 11, 22, 44 theory when reading it. Just my two cents.

    It should be 75912

    ReplyDelete
  83. angel, you are really close. its 56460

    ReplyDelete
  84. answer is 78144 if fri goes 11,22,44,88
or 76794 if fri goes 11,22,33,44

    ReplyDelete
  85. Dynamic spreadsheet showing answer https://rapidshare.com/files/4230165243/Lenny_406_answer.xlsx

    ReplyDelete
  86. 76794, that's what I got too, and I'm pretty sure it's right. The only other version could be with the different fridays, but that doesn't seem very logical.

    ReplyDelete
  87. whoo yay 76794:D got that too:D

    3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,348,72,144,9,3,786,33,2457,501,1002,13,3,5581,44,16875,3432,6864,17,3,38397.

last day is a Thursday so total jellies of the month=38397 times 2=76794

    ReplyDelete
  88. In the spreadsheet you can change the Friday values to what ever you think they should be and it will give you the answer corresponding to those values

    ReplyDelete
  89. As there can be 2 answers depending on how many jellies you get on fridays, I think TNT is just going to see which one people prefer less, and that's the "right" answer. They have done that some times before, I remember some months ago when there was another trick question about numbers which had 2 answers and as most people noticed that it was a trick question, they answered technically right, but TNT said that the right answer was the really obvious one, because practically no one answered that.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Yeah you're right the number is 76794.

    ReplyDelete
  91. i got : 3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,160,44,88,9,3,514,33,1641,925,1850,13,3,5493 ... so its all 10986
    -------------------------------------------------
i had you up until 160. saturdays you get three times the sum of the previous two days 94+22=116*3=348

    ReplyDelete
  92. Is it 89898?

    ReplyDelete
  93. Who says its for THIS year Month of Relaxing ?
The month can begin on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. Try everything uh !

    ReplyDelete
  94. ._. i got 82196...

    ReplyDelete
  95. I got 709,865,929 Jellies... I'm 100% positive I did everything properly too, and Math is my best subject... :P

    Here is my work:

    ReplyDelete
  96. wait wait wait... I missed a tuesday... T_T

    ReplyDelete
  97. kk, fixed it -.-"
    Correct work:

    30 days in June, 1st day= Wednesday

    T means Total

V means value of that day's jelly

R means rounded up from lower than 0.5

    1,(Wed, V=3 T=3) 2,(Thurs, V=3, T=6) 3,(Fri, V=11, T=17) 4,(Sat, V=42, T=59) 5, (Sun, v=15, T=74)

    11, (Sat, v=399, t=643) 12, (sun, v=84 R, t=727) 13, (mon, v=168, t=895) 14, (tues, v=8, t=903) 15, (wed, v=3, t=906)
    16, (thurs, v=906, t=1812) 17, (fri, v=33, t=1845) 18, (sat, v=2817, t=4662) 19, (sun, v=575, R, t=5237) 20, (mon, v=1150, t=6387)

    26, (sun, v=354,92770, t=283,947,394) 27, (mon, v=709,85540, t=354,932,934) 28, (tues, v=16, t=354,932,950) 29, (wed, v=3, t=354,932,937)
    30, (thurs, v=354,932,937 t=709,865,874)

    FINAL ANSWER: 709,865,874

    ReplyDelete
  98. But I didn't divide the first sunday by 7, only 4 so instead, if you count the previous days, (where you receive only 1 jelly) the average would be 8.8, rounding up to 9. in that case the answer would be 709,865,868...

    ReplyDelete
  99. Month of Relaxing only lasts through June 28 I think

    ReplyDelete
  100. 709,865,874
    ^ Jelly Invasion!?

    ReplyDelete
  101. There are two possible correct answers:

78144 if you believe Fridays are 11,22,44,88
76794 if you believe Fridays are 11,22,33,44

    -E-

    ReplyDelete
  102. Man...you dont even did it right.
    12,848 + 19,338 does not equal 248,454,624 ! O.o

    ReplyDelete
  103. These answers are correct IF you consider it's for this year's June Month.
But, is it mentionned in the question ?
    No.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Why wouldn't it be for this month though?
Seems illogical to me, for it to be another another year.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Okay we're kind hovering over the 709mil mark.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Everyone is forgetting that for the first Sunday, you get the average of the previous 7 days

Not just the previous days in june, you are forgetting to add 3 jellies for the 3 days that overlap into May

This throws off all of your answers

    ReplyDelete
  107. Also, you actually aren't receiving those 3 jellies

    I hope this makes sense

They should however, still factor into the average for the first Sunday in the same way you factor in the First thursday jelly as 1+4 = 5

    ReplyDelete
  108. post above meant first tuesday jelly as 1+4 = 5

    ReplyDelete
  109. i got (by day)
    3,3,11,42,9,18,5,3,94,22,348,72,144,9,3,786,44,2490,507,1014,13,3,5643,88,17193,3495,6990,17,3,39072 for a total of 78144
i used 1+4=5 for the first tuesday and double each time for friday. i also used 3 1's for the days before the month to count for the first sunday, but didnt count the 1's in the total (of course). everything else i think is straight forward

    ReplyDelete
  110. You started off wrong

Because you still have to count the 3 1's into the total for the first sunday

You aren't just dividing those 4 days by seven, you are still dividing the amount you got for the 7 days previously by 7

In the same way as how you are using the 1 jelly from the previous tuesday in May to get 5 Jelly for the first tuesday in June

Therefore, you're first week should look like this

    3, 3, 11, 42, 13

all your numbers after will be wrong if you did not do this

    ReplyDelete
  111. 0 because they said it didn't exist c:

    ReplyDelete
  112. why do they hide it its obvious its there i go there all the time!

    ReplyDelete
  113. For the person who said it should start 3, 3, 11, 42, 13, you're wrong.

If what you say is true, then multiplying 13*7 would give 91, meaning there would have to be 91 jellies in the previous week.

However, by what both of you are saying, the previous week's total would be 1+1+1+3+3+11+42=62

Dividing that by 7 would give just under 9, which rounded up would be 9.

    Make sense?

  116. I checked my math several times, and a lot of people have come up with the same two answers as me (depending on which interpretation of friday you use):
    78144 if Fridays are 11,22,44,88
    76794 if Fridays are 11,22,33,44

I'm pretty sure it's 76794 though, because when they say twice that, they mean twice that of the first friday, which is eleven. Not twice the previous friday.
