Lenny Conundrum - Round #416

As Grimilix makes another trip through space, keeping a vigilant eye out for his missing leader, he happens to glance at the odometer. (Space ships have odometers, okay?!) As of that moment, he'd gone 14,941 billion kilometers. This, of course, is a palindrome. Two hours later, he looked again and the odometer showed a new palindrome.

What was the average speed of the ship, in kilometers, in those two hours?

  1. Its easy. GL Guys (:

  2. If it's easy wats the answer?

    ReplyDelete
  3. 55 billion kilometers per hour

    ReplyDelete
  4. No, because you can't assume 15051 is the next palindrome. It could be 15151.

    ReplyDelete
  5. when time on neopets did this new LC contest come out at?

    ReplyDelete
  6. No, because you can't assume 15051 is the next palindrome. It could be 15151.
    -
you also can't assume that it's 15151. The question states that two hours later was when he saw a new palindrome, so he didn't see any palindromes before the two hour mark.

    ReplyDelete
  7. No Anonymous, it says "Two hours later, he LOOKED AGAIN and the odometer showed a new palindrome." That means an infinite number of palindromes could have passed the period before his "looking up".

    ReplyDelete
  8. 3:45 nst was the LC.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It could be 15151
    -
    If that's true it can also be 15251, 15351, 15451, 15551, 15651, 15751, 15851, 15951, and 15051.

    ReplyDelete
  10. >55 billion kilometers per hour
    WRONG.
You do not need to submit any units in LC.

    ReplyDelete
  11. And it says average sooo... speed, distance, or yeah...

    ReplyDelete
  12. You do not need to submit any units in LC
    -
Well they could have ment 55000000000.

Also it depends what " moment" is or how long it is.

  13. ^ I don't need neocash LOL.

  14. ^ I don't need neocash LOL. (2)

    ReplyDelete
  15. as long as you got your number right to go along with km/hour or km/2 hour you should get it right, it's all the same

    ReplyDelete
  16. NEOCASH IS FOR FUCKING LOSERS
I agree with anonymous above me :*

    ReplyDelete
  17. The answers for km/hour and km/2hour are different. o_0

Also, how can you be sure its the next palindrome like some1 said?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Also, how can you be sure its the next palindrome like some1 said?
    -
that's the closest bet. Otherwise people will be taking wild guesses at all the other palindromes that follow...

    ReplyDelete
  19. I bet there's a map of Grimilix somewhere measuring the distance of his travels! QUICK EVERYONE SEARCH. THIS WAY WE CAN FIGURE OUT THE VELOCITY OF HIS PREVIOUS TRIP

    ReplyDelete
  20. there are infinite answers. =\
    the numbers can be infinite.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm settling for 55billion km/h

    Don't think too much

    ReplyDelete
  22. I find this confusing because it's missing the total time.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 14,941.000.000.000 / 2 = 7,47.

    Maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  24. wouldnt it be 10001? considering that changes all 5 digits, and keeps the middle constant.

    ReplyDelete
  25. About the NC: So you're saying I'M a loser?? FYI, there are more impressive wearables in NC than NP items!
I'm not going to fight about it, but I will not tolerate being insulted like that.

    About the LC:
What the fudge is a palindrome?? I've never been good with math but even my mom hasn't heard of this! And that in itself is rather scary.

    ReplyDelete
  26. palindrome can be read the same forward as backward, BOB 19591 level ect.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Assuming the first trip took 1 hour u would use v=d/t and velocity or speed at this point would be x = 14941/1 so then you would calculate the overall speed

    ReplyDelete
  28. Fee, you may be right, but you should know that speed and velocity are not the same thing. You can have and average velocity of "1 m/s", and at the same time have an average speed of 55 m/s.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I got 124,508,333,333 km

    14,941,000,000,000/120
    =124,508,333,333

    ReplyDelete
  30. Would it not imply only the next palindrome?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Grimilix odometer 14,941 billion km

2 hours later the odometer showed a new palidrome. Without overthinking it, presume it is the NEXT palidrome available - so 15051

    15051 -14941 = 110 billion km

So that is the distance traveled in 2 hours. Divide that by 2 to get average distance traveled in one hour.

    110 divided by 2 = 55 billion KM or

    55,000,000,000

Now I am a moron when it comes to math, so perhaps I am completely wrong. Did I figure this out correctly?

    ~Dee

As of that moment, he'd gone 14,941 billion kilometers. This, of course, is a palindrome. Two hours later, he looked again and the odometer showed a new palindrome.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 55billion km/hr is faster than the speed of light so depending on how the odometer works will depend on whether it's impossible or you have to deal with length contraction

    ReplyDelete
  33. A palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or other sequence of units that can be read the same way in either direction, with general allowances for adjustments to punctuation and word dividers

    ReplyDelete
  34. we don't know how long it took him to travel 14941B km, and don't know how many palindromes he reached during the 2 hours, so this puzzle seems impossible, my answer was that 14941 billion (14941000000000) isn't a palindrome.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Neocash is for people who can afford it (parents like me)...but it is a total waste of money.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Wait how can we know the answer? if we don't know how long it took him to travel the 14,941b KM? what the hell TNT?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am stumped, there are not enough known variables. If you try to solve it as a system of equations, you only have 2 equations but you have 3 variables. There is just not enough information.

    ReplyDelete
  38. the closest one to the palindrome in the LC is 24942, which is 5,000.5 billion KPH

    ReplyDelete
  39. So the next palindrome after 14941 will be 15051 . But there are millions of options.

    7525.5...

    ReplyDelete
  40. You guys are over thinking this way too much. Yes there are infinite answers. But why would they give us a LC that DIDN'T have just one right answer. Assume that it is the NEXT palindrome. The answer is 55 billion kph. I would do the smart thing and put your units even if you don't need them. It won't make you wrong. Come on..."24942 is the closest"? Dude, really? They're not looking for a palindrome that "looks" the most like the one in the LC. It's obviously the next palindrome. Come on. It's really easy. There is enough information if you just be rational about it. If they made a LC with infinite answers, what would be the point of asking the question?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Really, how old are you if you can't do math this simple. 15051-14941=110. 110/2=55. It's two incredibly simple equations. Unless it's a trick question. Which I doubt.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The one thing that would make the answer of 55 billion kph wrong is what one of the Anonymous posters said above about the speed of light. Travelling above the speed of light would warp time and space and make it extremely difficult to find the correct answer short of doing some seriously complicated math. But, you know what? I really doubt TNT was counting on us to do that. As far as "which palindrome" goes, I think it's safe to assume it's the next integer that is a palindrome. Making it 15051. This is clearly the best answer.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with Anonymous.

    Answer: 55 billion km/hr

    MAKE SURE YOU INCLUDE BILLION

    ReplyDelete
  44. I really hate the way this question is worded. It's really vague and thus it can't really be for sure answered based on the information given (this is assuming there's no trick they're pulling that we just don't see.)

Also, 15051 billion is not the very next palindrome after 14941 billion, in fact there's many palindromes that come in between those two numbers. Unless his odometer only reads in #Billion-km, then yes, 15051 would be next.

    Two answers I got;

If the odometer reads ONLY in Billion kms, then
    (15051billion-14941billion)/2 = 55,000,000,000 km/hr

If the odometer doesn't read ONLY in Billion kms, then the original number isn't really a palindrome, but...

    (14,941,000,014,941 - 14,941,000,000,000)/2 = 7,470.5 km/hr

I hope there's a trick so I don't have to be disappointed in the lack of information on a math problem. :P

    ReplyDelete
  45. You know, if we knew if the odometer read only in billion kilometers, this problem would have been solved much more earlier.

Guess we'll have to give it a shot without knowing, I think the odometer does read on billion kilometers..

    I guess..

    ReplyDelete
  46. There are many things wrong with this problem.
-First of all, "What was the average speed of the ship, in kilometers, in those two hours?" Last time I checked, speed was measured in kilometers per hour.
-How many sig figs does neopets want? The speed will have 5 sig figs, but the questions is asked like "Two hours later", which is time for the variable "t". The number is not written out, so the number of sig figs is unknown. If it were simply "2 h", then the answer would have to be written in scientific notation to accomodate for only 1 sig fig.

    ReplyDelete
  47. i say we all give up, and nobody gets it right... that way all the other nice neopians will have a chance to get the fancy nice trophy! everybody wins!!!

besides, this is against the rules!

  50. ok... what contest is this called? i sound really dumb, but i have to know. someone please tell me.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Lenny Conundrum

    ReplyDelete
  52. Umm... Hey, they don't want a palindrome, they want the speed of the ship in kilometers, which I believe is 916.

It's a distraction, the way they worded it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. How did you get 916? That sounds beyond reason. I don't see it. They want the speed of the ship which can be km/h.(more likely than just km)

Also, they want the speed of the TWO HOURS that it took from the first palindrome to the second palindrome. And you can't really find the answer without the second. So I'm curious as to how you got 916.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Okay, you have to figure out what the next palindrome would be. You take the first palindrome and look for the next one you can create.

Then determine the speed based on the distance they drove divided by the amount of time and all that rot.

As for how I did that, I googled the question and was told that was the answer using the method which I just described, so I accepted it. And I said I *believed* the answer was 916, I knew the method, I just didn't want to have to do the math.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The next palindrome is 14,941,000,014,941 so the answer could be 7470.5 km/h.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Maybe they want you to go from 14,941,000,014,941 to 14,941,011,014,941, which I think is the next palindrome. That gives a total distance of 11,000,000. If that's the case, the answer is 5.5 million km/hr.

Not that I think this is right, but maybe somebody else might like this option better.

  58. Cheers for the 14,941,000,014,941, it was a good suggestion, but if that's the next palindrome then the orginal of 14,941,000,000,000 is NOT a palindrome right?

    ReplyDelete
  59. who says the next palindrome has to be a full number? What about 14941.14941? If you put the speed of light into the mix.. the only possible palindrome it could possibly be without going over the speed of light is 14941.14941

    ReplyDelete
  60. it's 14941 BILLION kilometers. 14941.14941 billion km is the same as 14941149410000 unless you're trying to say 14941000000000000.14941

    ReplyDelete
  61. okay I'm saying 14941.14941 BILLION KM.
or 14941000000000000.14941 that works. if you factor in the speed of light. Would they do that?

    ReplyDelete
  62. 14.941 billiones km = 1 palindrome

In 2 hours, another palindrome. So, you could say, that in 2h, he did the same distance.

    ReplyDelete
  63. What's to say he DIDN'T turn around and slow down? Then it would be 14,841 miles, correct?

    ReplyDelete
  64. To add to my last comment, I've seen older trucks reverse the odometer by going backwards. (I meant backwards when I said turn around)

    ReplyDelete
  65. i have no idea what the answer will be, but i can rule out anything having to do with the speed of light, which you all seem to realize is something to do with 3 million. what you don't realize is that's in meters per second. the question is in kilometers per hour, aka 10.8 trillion is the number you'd have to exceed to be traveling the speed of light.

    ReplyDelete
  66. hindsight is 20/20. after reading my comment i realized that 14941 billion is 14.9 trillion. my bad. go on with the speed of light neopets conflict.

    ReplyDelete
  67. The correct answer is 55 Billion km/hr

    ReplyDelete
  68. The new one is up.
    Answer: OSGWN or NOSGWN...

    ReplyDelete
  69. shouldn't it be NOSGWNI

No! Only removed letters, and she has one letter left!

    ReplyDelete
  72. owing is a word too so it might go that direction. And yes, you shouldn't include the "I" in your answer since it only asks for the letters removed.
