Lenny Conundrum - Round #418

Roffle is a pretty confused spyder. Rather than spin your average web, he only makes square versions. You know, maybe he's a genius and we don't know it! In any case, the square thing is still kinda weird.

Anyway, one day, he came upon this pattern of dots on the ground because that makes perfect sense. He decided to use this pattern to spin his next set of webs.

How many individual square webs can Roffle form using this template, if the dots mark the corners of the squares?

Enter an integer ONLY.

  1. It seems too easy... :(

  2. I Was going to say, 5... It's asking for how many squares, which I think means rectangles don't count...

    ReplyDelete
  3. i got 6... i caught one trick but still seems way too simple

    ReplyDelete
  4. I googled 9 dots how many squares... And there was a formula on how to get 20?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I got 6.the whole thing(1) each corner to the center and make a square(2,3,4,5) and a diamond aka sideways square(6) if the count rectangles its 10.(down the sides and across the top and bottom(7,8,9,10))

  6. I got 6 since a Square is a Rectangle, but a Rectangle isn't a Square

    ReplyDelete
  7. I put 5...

...but it's most likely 6 because of the diamond, something I missed in my haste :(

    ReplyDelete
  8. I'm going to say 6 because a rectangle is not a square. :P

  9. I got 6 since a Square is a Rectangle, but a Rectangle isn't a Square.

Good point. I forgot that but still put 6. I figured rectangles didnt count.

    ReplyDelete
  10. It is 6.

THere is the square from the 4 corners, the 1x1 squares, and the square formed from the midpoints on each edge. THerefore there are 6 which is the right answer.

    ReplyDelete
  11. 10 is what i got due to the rectangles

    ReplyDelete
  12. I got 9. The four squares you should get right off the bat, the whole thing, two vertical rectangles, and two horizontal rectangles.

    squares ARE rectangles.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Rectangles are not squares, they're rectangles.

Those rectangles consist of two squares that were already counted.

    The answer is 6.

    ReplyDelete
  14. squares ARE rectangles
^ but rectangles ARE NOT squares

    the answer is five

    ReplyDelete
  15. IT IS NOT 5!!!!! There is a diamond from the top middle dot, right middle, bottom middle, and left middle. It's a diamond, or a sideways SQUARE. added to the whole thing and the four small ones. If I'm not mistaken, 1+1+4=6, not 5.

    ReplyDelete
  16. it's 6 with the diamond in the middle.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Forgot about the sideways one, and put 5. Oh well :/

    ReplyDelete
  18. I got 10! Don't forget to look at the diamond and I am a math teacher and rectangles are squares and vice versa.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 10 with rectangles 6 without ima gonna put 6

    ReplyDelete
  20. WHAT KIND OF MATH TEACHER ARE YOU!?!?!

    ReplyDelete
  21. What a terrible math teacher, lol. Are you going to tell students that a 2x4 rectangle is a square?

    ReplyDelete
  22. be nice to the math teacher!!

    ... I got 5.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'm pretty sure it's six; the four 1x1 squares, the outside square, and the diamond in the middle. I don't think the 2x1 rectangles count as squares.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I got 6 as described above by many.

I think the "math teacher" needs to be fired though if I'm honest.

    ReplyDelete
  25. A square is a quadrilateral with 4 right angles and all sides are equal. A rectangle is a quadrilateral with four right angles. So a square is a rectangle, but a rectangle is not a square. So the answer is 6.

    ReplyDelete
  26. BY DEFINITION a rectangle has two pairs of sides, where one pair is equal, but different to the other.a square just needs four sides. I mean 2x2x2x2 doesnt equal rectangle

    ReplyDelete
  27. ^^ If a square "just needed four sides" then every quadrilateral would be a square.

And yes, in fact, a figure that has side lengths 2x2x2x2 (commonly denoted 2x2) is a rectangle. It is also a square.

If that particular figure had side lengths 2x4x2x4 (commonly denoted 2x4), it would be a rectangle, but not a square.

(each of the above figures is assumed to have four right angles)

BY DEFINITION, as you so wittingly phrased it, the majority of the people posting here are extremely retarded.

Either learn your math or get the hell out.

  28. Ok guys, a rectangle is two pairs of equal or unequally lengthed parrallell lines, a square is the same thing but its sides need to all be equal. Also 4 right angles.

    ReplyDelete
  29. telling you tha answerz 4. dots mark the CORNERS OF THE SQUARES!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Another Math teacher here... the answer is most definitely 6.
    __
    | | /\
    |__| + \/ + the 4 small squares in the corners

Definition of a square 4 congruent (equal) sides AND 4 congruent (equal) angles. The 2 x 1 rectangles fail this test as they don't have 4 congruent sides.

The diamond in the middle is where smoe of you are getting tripped up, but it really is a square and the answer really is 6.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OH, the formatting didn't hold up on my post. Put 2 spaces between the || so it forms a large square and diamond. Good thing I teach math not graphic design. Sheesh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. DAMN, it's six -.-'

    ReplyDelete
  33. It is 6, nothing else to discuss.

How can some people say that it's 10??? Even my cousin who's seven years old knew the answer in just a few seconds... Human stupidity keeps amazing me...

    ReplyDelete
  34. You are all dumb asses - a diamond IS NOT A SQUARE - it's a diamond - the answer is 5 !!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. ^ woooooooooooow. Really??? A diamond is a sideways square. 4 equal sides and right angles. ITS A SQUARE. U guys are a bunch of morons.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Why on earth would a spider build a sideways web - you da moron !!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Who da moron - YOU DA MORON !!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. are you stupid, if it's able to form a web a square, why not sideways, besides, we are only looking at it from 1 angle, but the spider is not

  39. Next week I will post on the next conundrum laughing at all who thought it wasn't six. Anyone that put six shouldn't give out the answer next week. Let them figure it out themselves. I never post the answers >:D

    ReplyDelete
  40. Guys, the people that are telling you that rectangles and squares are the same thing are just trying to confuse people to get them to put the wrong answer in. They want other people to get it wrong so they're sabotaging them.

The answer is six because a square is a rectangle, but not all rectangles are squares. Squares have four sides that are the same length, something we all learned in elementary school at the very latest.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well I'm saying 383618477184728372847194772819478473829373747204838184838294739284818482937294728374817382748274814828828818472938294829384928. >:D

  43. "Next week I will post on the next conundrum laughing at all who thought it wasn't six. Anyone that put six shouldn't give out the answer next week. Let them figure it out themselves. I never post the answers >:D "

Sadly, that won't work. I tried that for Round #413. Everyone who said the answer wasn't 1997 stop arguing and just disappeared when the answer was released. Thats how things work on the internet.

    ReplyDelete
  44. you can look at it sideways also, the answer is 7.

    ReplyDelete
  45. ya know what? it might actually be five. even though i put six. i'm sure we can agree on the 4 small squares and (perhaps) the diamond, but the big one might not count.
note that it says, "the dots mark the corners of the squares." in that case, would the big one not count because some dots are on its edges?
    if so...drat. if not...phew.

    ReplyDelete
  46. i accidentally put 4 as the answer....-.-

    ReplyDelete
  47. lol ^^
but i agree with the very first post. im guessing that loads of ppl said 5 or 6. there's gotta be some other trick...

    ReplyDelete
  48. It seems more like it's 5. The "diamond" is actually a rhombus, and is a completely different geometrical figure. :P

    ReplyDelete
  49. The "diamond" is not a rhombus as a rhombus has acute angles. The "diamond" in the picture clearly has 90 degree angles which is what distinguishes rhombus from squares.
