Lenny Conundrum - Round #441

"Eight! Three! Maths!" Dr. Ballard was quite excited and quite distraught all at the same time. A colleague of his had given him a puzzle that might drive him mad, if he wasn't so clever... and also handsome.

The puzzle? The good doctor was to take only two 8's and only two 3's, and any quantity/combination of the standard operators - plus, minus, multiply, and divide - to find an equation in which the result would equal 24.

He was not allowed to get fancy! Parenthesis were allowed, but no tricks. No cubes or squares or combining numbers to get another number. This was a test of pure maths skill.

And oh, would he pass it. He had to. You can't be a maths professor and not. That's preposterous.

What is the equation Dr. Ballard came up with?

Please enter just the equation with no spaces! (For example, "4+(4*4)=20"... only, you know, with the right answer.)

    1. but theres supposed to be a operator/parenthesis at the front

    2. Assuming TNT uses BEDMAS 8/(3-(8/3) is the same as (8/(3-8/3)=24

    3. you wouldn't be able to put the /( before the 3. because that is two operators

    4. To the guy who said "you wouldn't be able to put the /( before the 3. because that is two operators" ... the example Neopets gives is...

"4+(4*4)=20"... only, you know, with the right answer.

So if Neopets also has an operator and a parentheses, then you should be able to do it as well.

    5. But the point is that that isn't the right answer...

  2. I googled how to make 24 with two 3's and two 8's and that's what I got.

  3. I send "3*3*3-3=24"

    1. No. You have to use 2 8s and 2 3s.

  4. How about the closed bracket?

    ReplyDelete
  5. 8*8/3+3=24 (roughly)

    1. 64 divided by 6 is not 24

      Delete
    2. It's not devided by sx...for that to happen it would have to be in () which I did not use. Basic math skills. 8*8=64/3=21+3=24 simple.

      Delete
    3. 64/3 does not equall 21. Simple.

      Delete
    4. 64/3 is not exactly 21...
Maybe they are not accepting aproximations..

  6. What are the chances of getting the trophy for this event if you submit your answer in about 6 minutes after this was posted?

  7. But can we use negative numbers?

    ReplyDelete
  8. 8*8=64/3=21+3=24 simple.
Don't see this working because the division portion does not result in a whole number!

    ReplyDelete
  9. (8/(3-(8/3)) is what I put. I put the extra one at the end so that it would be closed. Not sure if that matters or not.
The example makes it look okay to have an operator and a paranthesis next to each other even though there's only one ?.

    2. you need two 8s and two 3s

  12. So what is the answer?

    ReplyDelete
  13. 8*8=64/3=21+3=24 from this equation - which I realize isn't quit right, could we use a modulus function to get the 21.3333 to 21?

    ReplyDelete
  14. that's just basic mathematics.. my answer:

    *tadaa!*

    (3*3*8)/3

    ReplyDelete
  15. you used three 3s though

    ReplyDelete
  16. YES!!!! I found it!!! HINT: As a little kid I used to play a MATHS GAME CALLED 24....

  17. you fag....instead of giving hints, give the answer

    1. I only gave a hint so that less people would get the answer. The less people who get it the bigger the prize pool. Do some researh of your own instead of being a lazy ass who uses other peoples answers!

  19. 8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24
    8/(3-8/3) = 24

      But, you're still wrong ;)

  24. 1st of all, I'm not 12.
2nd of all, I'm not stupid. None of you have come to a correct answer or some haven't used the right numbers/right amount. I'm portraying the sadness that is this week. You can't criticize me for not having an answer. I never said I did, but I'm actually thinking logically.

    5. Maybe you are 11 then ??? Ya hairy chuff !!!

    6. Yeah uh YOU said "I know it" which means you did say you had the answer. And the rest of us are thinking logically. Btw, no one said you weren't thinking logically.

  25. How the heck does 8/(3-(8/3)= 24? 8/3= 2.6. 3-2.6= 1.6. 8/1.6= 5. That is definitely wrong. The closest I got was ((8*8)/3)+3). I really don't believe this equation can work without negatives or rounding decimals. Most of you are using three 3's and not two eights which really throws the whole thing off.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. this actually works. 3-2.6 is not 1.6. Its .4 But, 8/3 = 2.6666.....continued. and 3-2.666666.... comes to be .33333.... and when you divide 8 by .333333... you get 24. If you put into a calculator 8/.333...with atleast fifteen 3's, you'll get 24.

      Delete
  26. I used 3*3*3-3=24. Which is also right. I probably didn't read the problem right because I didn't use an 8 at all...

    ReplyDelete
  27. how about (8*3=3*8)=24

although im not sure if = is a standard operation.....then again it is pretty much used all the time and it seems pretty standard..... any comments???

    ReplyDelete
  28. The problem I see with the correct answer of 3*8+3-3 is that it could be 8*3+3-3 or 3*8-3+3 or 3*8-8+8 and all other variations. In total that makes 8 possible correct answers -.-

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If i may, i would like to emphasise the TWO 3'S and TWO 8'S ONLY part... but yeah if that was an example and not you wanting to give out the actual answer, i guess you're right... there are multiple answers when you switch the position of the numbers.

      Delete
  29. 8/(3-(8/3))=24

Its in wiki under the 24 game.

    ReplyDelete
  30. What about the operation at the beginning? there is supposed to be one before the first number

    ReplyDelete
  31. I know I know - it's 8x3=24 - ya smelly chuff !!!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Try using (8/(3-8/3)) - I checked with a calculator and the result was 24 (but i am not sure about the parenthesis)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The parenthesis are wrong because it would be 3-8=-5, then -5/3,
      insead of 3-(8/3)

      Delete
    2. The parenthesis are right. Its called the order of operation. You do everything in parenthesis first. And multipying/diving comes first. So you would do 8/3 first. Then 3- the answer. and then you continue with what is outside the parenthesis. the only parathensis you do not need, is the one before the 8, and the second one at the end of the equation.

      Delete
    3. Yes, parenthesis first. So:
      PEMDAS

      8/(3-8/3)=

      8/ (3-2.6)=
      8/.4=20 :D

      Delete
  33. I think 8/(3-8/3) = 24 is the correct answer

    ReplyDelete
  34. +8/(3-8/3) :) Putting the plus in front of the sum won't do anything, so.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Otherwise -8/(8/-3-3) will work too. As far as I can see there are 28 correct solutions.

      Delete
    2. isnt a negative not considered an operative?

      Delete
    3. I did my solution which was the + thing and I won :P

      Delete
  35. You can't put a parenthesis and an operator together. LOOK AT THE IMAGE AND LEARN THE RULES.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. LOL, way to tell them! Cookies for you.

However, I still haven't gotten an answer yet, so...

      Delete
    2. Yes you can.

"Please enter just the equation with no spaces! (For example, "4+(4*4)=20"... only, you know, with the right answer.)"

      Delete
    3. Okay, so the rule say the numbers HAS to be 8 or 3... and yet:

For example, "4+(4*4)=20"... only, you know, with the right answer.
      ---
Are you people so silly to not see this so plainly? -____-

  36. Look the 24 game was a good hint y did someone have to go and post all the answers from the site? sum ppl should stop being so lazy and at least try to figure it out once ur lucky enough to get a hint. This is y barley anyone ever wins a trophy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. You guys can use both operators and parenthesis next to each other because the [?] said operators/parenthesis

    and the hint.. "4+(4*4)=20"...

therefore the answer is : (8/(3-8/3))

    ReplyDelete
  38. 8/(3-(8/3)) If this doesn't make sense at first do it this way in your mind... 8/(3+(-8/3))

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks to you guys i was in the first 250 to guess correctly xD
