Lenny Conundrum - Round #413

A frugal Neopian decides to buy a Kepru companion. He pays 5,112 NP for it, and he is very content with his new Petpet. A few months later, though, the value of Kepru has increased to 6,070 NP and he decides to sell it to someone else. A few days later he realises that was a mistake. He really misses the Kepru so he buys it back. Unfortunately he has to pay 6,516 NP to get it back, so he loses 446 NP. After another year of owning the Kepru, he finally decides once and for all to sell it for 7,555 NP and make a tidy profit.

What is his total profit after all is said and done?

ANSWER : 1997
There seems to be two answers. Read the comments, and go with your best judgement.

137 comments :

  1. The profit can't include the loss.

    7,555 - 6,516 = 1,039
    6,070 - 5,112 = 958

    1,039 + 958 = 1,997
    1,997 - 446 = 1,551

    ReplyDelete
  2. I got 1997 NP

    ReplyDelete
  3. i got 1997.

    -5112 + 6070 - 6516 + 7555 = 1997.
the 446 is because he lost money for buying it more expensively than when he had previously sold it and therefore that information is useless.

    ReplyDelete
  4. in the end they sold it for 7555
but they payed 5112 for it in the first place
    so that's 7555-5112=2443
    however
they lost another 446 when they sold it and then rebought it for more
    so 2443-446=1997

  5. yeah the answer is 1997

    ReplyDelete
  6. it's 1551 jeez

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yeah I think its 1,551 NP

    ReplyDelete
  8. Honestly I see how you guys get both your answers.... But idk which way you got the answer is right...

    ReplyDelete
  9. I agree with 1997

    ReplyDelete
  10. look at this:

    6070 - 5112 = 958

    958 - 446 = 512

    512 + (7555 - 6516) = 1551

Does it have to be simpler?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Its 1997.

I'll laugh in your faces next Wednesday.

It says he loses 446 because he Buys it for more money than he last sold it for so this is redundant information.

    ReplyDelete
  12. 6070 - 5112 = 958
    6516 - 958 = 5558
    7555 - 5558 = 1997

1997 seems more logical to me.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Well i dont know but i want a Kepru :D

    ReplyDelete
  14. ignore the 446, you calculate that yourself. it is 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I wrote 1997 NP

Do you think if thats right, will they accept the 'NP?'

    ReplyDelete
  16. I bought my pet for 5112, I'm happy with it.
    I sell it for 6070, I get a profit of 958.
I buy it back for 6516, I pay an EXTRA 446 + the profit I already got, which means my profit is just 512. I sell it back for 7555, getting more profit, totalling at 1551.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Nope, it's 1551. Try again

Now that you put it like that, it makes more sense lol.

    ReplyDelete
  19. You do not just subtract 5112 from 7555 and subtract 446 from that to get the overall profit. The guy HAD to earn an EXTRA 446 to buy it back, which means it's another loss.

    Listen to this pro

  21. I pay 5112 so I'm at: -5112. Then I sell for 6070 so I'm at +958. Then I buy it again for 6516, I'm at: -5558. Then I sell again for 7555 so I'm at: 1,997.

    So basically:

    -5112 + 6070 - 6516 + 7555 = 1997

    ReplyDelete
  22. 6070 - 5112 = 958 profit
    6516 - 6070 = 446 loss
    958 - 446 = 512 balance
    7555 - 6516 = 1039 profit
    1039 + 512 = 1551 profit

    Answer: 1551

    ReplyDelete
  23. *facepalm*

    Here's what I did.

    6070 - 5112 = 958 profit
    6516 - 6070 = 446 loss
    7555 - 6516 - 446 = 593

The 446 means that's what he lossed TOTAL. Here's an explanation. He payed 5112 for the Kepru and he sold it for 6070, right? Well, he USED the 6070 NP he had and he loss 446 NP because he had to pay 6516 NP. Then he sold it for the final time and with the included loss it adds up to 593 NP.

    It's that simple. :P

    ReplyDelete
  24. so what's your answer? ^

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi, I got 1,551. o_O

    Uh.. it's not 1997

    ReplyDelete
  26. (6070-5112) - (6516-6070) + (7555-6516) =
    958 - 446 + 1039 =
    1551

    tadaa!!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. so fucking easy *facepalm*

    ReplyDelete
  28. Everyone else that submitted anything but 593 is stupid. I don't see how 1551 or 1997 can be the answer, but if it gets me more NP I have no problem with it. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. ^ that above method is incorrect but still the right answer nevertheless

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's 1551...
And I'm going to laugh in YOUR face on Wednesday :P

    ReplyDelete
  31. Though I see it being 1551, I see how it could be justified to 1997.

    7555 - 5112 = 2443 profit
but he lost 446 in the middle so
    2443 - 446 = 1997

hmmm... I'm not too sure with either answer now.

  36. Anon #1000000 is here to save the day!

Let's say Mr. Frugal Neopian has 10,000NP on him.

Buying means subtract NP, and selling means add NP obviously.

    10,000NP - 5,112NP = 4,888NP
    4,888NP + 6,070NP = 10,958NP
    10,958NP - 6,516NP = 4,442NP
    4,442NP + 7,555NP = 11,997NP

So Mr. Frugal Neopian started with 10,000NP on him and ended his conquest with 11,997NP, which means that he gained a profit of:

    *DRUMROLL*

    1997NP!!!

  37. The answer is clearly: COZ IT IS CLOSE TO US

  39. You can't do that Anon 1000000

    ReplyDelete
  40. 6070 - 5112 = 958 profit
    6516 - 6070 = 446 loss
    958 - 446 = 512 balance
    7555 - 6516 = 1039 profit
    1039 + 512 = 1551 profit

    ReplyDelete
  41. Let's say I start out w/ 5NP.
    I buy a 1NP item, so now I have 4NP.
I sell it for 2NP, so now I have 6NP.
I buy it later for 3NP, so now I have 3NP.
    I sell it for 4NP, now I have 7NP.

    If I started out with 5NP and ended w/ 7NP, I made a profit of 2NP.

This will lead to the 1997NP answer.

Now let's examine this situation again.

    When I sold the item for 2NP, I made a 1NP profit.
    When I bought the item for 3NP, I made a 1NP loss.
    When I sold the item for 4NP, I made a 1NP profit.

    1NP - 1NP + 1NP = 1NP

    I made a 1NP profit.

That's the logic to getting the 1551NP answer.

I am Anon #1000000 from earlier, and I must say that the first method looks a lot more reliable.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think it is 1997.
    7555-5112-446=1997

    ReplyDelete
  43. I believe it is 1997 as well.
he paid a total of (5112+6516), and sold at (6070+7555).
    therefore, he gained 13625 - 11628, which is 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I put 1997 because that's how it worked out for me, which probably means its 1551. lol

    ReplyDelete
  45. We will see the answer next week.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Math person says: 1997 :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's 1551, better luck next time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is another way to look at it:

    Total money spent: 5112 + 6516 = 11628

    Total money received: 6070 + 7555 = 13625

    Profit: 13625 - 11628 = 1997

    ***

The "loss of 446 NP" is actually just redundant information. The pet was sold at one point for 6070, but it had to be bought back for 6516. One minus the other gives you a loss of 446 NP. There is no "extra" loss in addition to the price difference already taken into account above. Thus, the answer cannot be 1551.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Profit is determined by revenue minus expenses. Or the amount the pet was bought for vs the amount it was sold for. It was bought and sold twice. It was bought for 5112 and 6516, so total expenses equaling - 11628. He sold it once for 6070 and again for 7555, so revenue of +13625. Using the definition above that makes the profit 1997.

    Why is the other answer wrong? The other reasoning is: I made 958, then loss 446, so end up with 512. then make another profit of (7555-6516 = 1039) + 512 = 1551. The problem with that is this: I spent 5112 then sold to make 958. So I now exactly have 5112 + 958 = 6070 ( NOT 6070 + 958 = 7028). Then I bought for 6516 so 6070 - 6516. I am at -446 ( NOT 7028 - 6516 = 512). Then I sell again for 7555. So 7555 minus initial cost (5112) minus loss (446) is 1997. NOT 7555 minus last bought price (6516) plus 512. You are double dipping, taking the loss out twice. May I point out 1551 + 446 = 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  50. ugh is there anyone smart here?

    ReplyDelete
  51. all these answers are wrong

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yeah the answer is 1997.. But this was very Easy to make a mistake. That's why they chose it.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Those who say 1551 are counting the 446 NP loss twice..

    Idiots.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I just want to say I don't think the answer is 1997 any more.

I know that the answer is 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Nope, it's 1997. Try again.

It's 1997, better luck next time.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Its 1997, the reason is its the TOTAL profit, so its from how much he had at the beginning compared to how much he had at the end.
For example say he had 10,000 NP. after spending 5112 NP he now has 4888 NP. Then he gains 6070 NP giving him 10958 NP. Once again he spends part of it and loses 6516 NP leaving him with 4442 NP. Finally when he gains 7555 NP, this leaves him with 11997 NP. Taking 10,000 from this leaves you with 1997 - the total profit. I'm hoping this is right as my reputation as a math nerd is at stake. Then again im only 14 so leave room for mistakes.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I put in 1997.
Its got to be 1997 because the 446 it says is how much he lost?
    Im confused 0.0

    ReplyDelete
  58. It IS 1551, I thought LONG and HARD yesterday.
Okay, I buy my pet for 5112. I sell it for 6070, giving me 958 profit. I EARN AN EXTRA 446, which is a LOSS, which means this HAS to be subtracted from my previous PROFIT because it is a LOSS. Which means my real profit is just 512. I sell it again for 7555, and my total is now 1551.
When you paid for the 446, you HAD to subtract it from the profit because it was a LOSS. You don't just subtract 5112 from the 7555, because the transition from 6070 to 6516 is a LOSS. It's 5112 to 6070, then 6516 to 7555 for the PROFIT and from this, you SUBTRACT the loss. You have to have taken it STEP by STEP and not as a whole.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Also, you guys need to think about he comment that was said:
'The person was content with it.'
He did not buy it for solely the purpose of getting a profit from it, he sold it when the prices went up. This comment made me rethink when I calculated. It was put up there so people won't use the 5112 as a loss, it's what he gets from it. If I play games and earn 2000 and used it to buy an item, I then resold this item for 3000. Would you say I lost 1000? Or would you say I got a profit of 1000?

    ReplyDelete
  60. "A frugal Neopian decides to buy a Kepru companion. He pays 5,112 NP for it, and he is very content with his new Petpet."
He did not buy the petpet for profit purposes. He sold it only because its price rose. You do not say that the first 5112 was a loss.
Now, I'm much more confident in my answer. 0:-)

    ReplyDelete
  61. (The money you gained) - (The money you paid) = (Total profit)

    So it's (6070 + 7555) - (6516 + 5112) = 1997

    Okay... 6070-5112=958 right?
    Now 7555-6516=1039 right?
Now add those two together, 1039+958, and what do you get? 1997. I also had no idea what you were blabbing about for half the time.

    ReplyDelete
  65. 0 - 5112 + 6070 - 6516 + 7555 = 1997

The answer CAN'T be anything else. It's the easiest Lenny Conundrum I've seen. You'd have to be a complete idiot to get it wrong, even my 7 year old cousin could do it.

    ReplyDelete

In this reasoning you make a profit where you should make a loss. when you pay 446 + 958. you don't get to keep 958-446=512 you get to keep -446. the answer is 1997

    ReplyDelete
  67. Guys, the answer is obviously : Saving Krawk Island. I mean, that's what this week is all about right?
    Ps. I put 1997

  68. Assume he has 10000np right. Buy for 5112 he has 4888 left. sell for 6070 he now has 10958. Buy again for 6516 meaning he now has 4442. Finally selling it for 7555 gives him a total of 11997NP. 11997 - 10000 = 1997. this is the profit. using this method you can see the transition between profits and losses. also since it says TOTAL profis it is the change in price, or savings, of the final price ( the one he sold for at the end ) and the beginning price ( the one he bought it for )
    Easy.

    =============
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, and DOUBLE wrong. The 446 is redundant. 6516-6070=446.
    DUH!
    Idiots, I swear.

    ReplyDelete
  73. you guys are skipping the stuff in the middle!!!

6070-5112=958(this is the profit of when he sold it)

6516-6070=446(this is what he lost for buying it again)

so then you have to subtract!!

958-446=512 (this is his profit so far)

then he sells it again for a higher price but you have to subtract 7555 to the price he payed when he bought it back!!

7555-6516=1039 (this is his second profit)

so then you add both numbers of profit!!

    1039+512=1551

    ReplyDelete
  74. the thing is, the method all of you are using makes it unclear both what you mean and where the mistake is, which if you got 1551 or anything other than 1997, is definitely there. if you use the method i mentioned erlier, twice, you can clearly see what happens and why its 1997. please just trust me ive got a Phd in Maths, i think i know what im doing. to the guy who got 1039, how the fk? and if you got 1551 i think, dont know, that you took 446 away 2x, since 1551 is 446 less than 1997. also on the low chance that i am wrong, and before anyone starts flaming. i have left brain hemiparesis which lowers my mathematical cognitive capabilities, so...

I realize how you guys can get 1551, but it's because you're accidentally factoring in the 446 loss twice.

Think about his payments as going in debt:

Pays 5112. So He's 5112 in the . Then you subtract 6070 because he's just made that back. So now he's at -958. Which means he's out of debt. Then he decides to buy it back again for 6516, which puts him back in the hole. -958 + 6516 = 5558. He's back in debt. But then he finally sells it again. 5558 - 7555 = 1997.

    -----------------------------------------------

    ALSO:

    Another way to do it.

    Take what he pays in total: 5112 + 6516 = 11628.

And subtract what he sells it for in total: 13625.

    13625 - 11628 = 1997.

    -----------------------------------------------

    ReplyDelete
  76. i went with 1997 :D

    ReplyDelete
  77. Or even simply:

He sold it for 7555 in the end. He paid 5112 in the beginning.

Therefore, if he hadn't have sold it he would have made: 7555 - 5112 = 2443.

BUT he lost 446 when he paid for it again.

    2443 - 446 = 1997.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ok you idiots that believe it is 1551 here is what you are doing wrong.
    7555-6516 = 1039
    6070-5112 = 958
Here's where you guys shit the bed
    1039+958 = 1997
then you morons subtract another 446, and you're wondering why not?
The key is 7555-6516 <- includes the 446 loss
in order to re-purchase the pet.

  79. here's where you guys shit the bed. love that XD ^^^

  80. guys, i thought the answer was 1551. but i asked my mom (who happens to be a high school math teacher) to solve it and she said its 1997. So I'll believe her. And I showed her some of these answers (for 1551) and she says that those people's logic is wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  81. i dont think you guys should be arguing with each other over what is the right answer :(, yes i did put 1551 as my answer but who cares, you probably won't get the trophy now anyway :p

    ReplyDelete
  82. People, this is the objective of Lenny Conundrum. XD
TNT wants us to be confused, thats why LC is so fun and challenging!!! ^^

    ReplyDelete
  83. I'm still surprised that "Coz it is close to us" was the answer to the last one (Got it right but no trophy x_x) I put 1997 for this one..

    ReplyDelete
  84. Guys, if you copy and paste onto youtube, a video appears of two creepy looking things that sing some stupid song. And at one point they sing:
"PROFIT IS 1997 COZ IT IS CLOSE TO US"

    case closed

    ReplyDelete
  85. btw, is 1997 fine without the units?

    ReplyDelete
  86. It's NOT 1997, it asks you AFTER ALL WAS SAID AND DONE. NOT how much it is TOTAL PROFIT BEFORE ALL WAS SAID AND DONE you idiots!

It's as simple as that, all of you must either be stupid, tired, or you had a brain fart.

AND you keep forgetting the fact that he paid for it AGAIN for 6,516 NP. 7,555 minus 6,516 NP is NOT 1,997 NP.

AND you DON'T add the stinking profit because he lost it when he bought the stinking Kepru again. *watches people groan about putting in 1997 or 1551 instead of the actual answer*

    ........

    Sorry about the rant....

    ReplyDelete
  87. Ok i cant take it any more ^^^ What the fudge? TOTAL profit. TOTAL. TOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL... it doesnt matter if it was after or not the important bit was the TOTAL profit. it is 1997. also your comment suggests that you got an answer different to 1997 or 1551 meaning you did something completely rong. What makes you qualified to assume the majority of people who got 1551/1997 is wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  88. They keyword is PROFIT. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/profit

I answered 1551 because I figured in the expenses as you SHOULD when it states profit. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  89. The dude pays for it twice, and loses that money:
    5112+6516= 11628
However, he also gets money twice:
    6070+7555= 13625
substract the lost money from the gained money:
    13625-11628= 1997 = total profit

That's one way to do it.
    =====================
    Another way:
He pays 5112, and I assume that's the only money the dude has, so:
    -5112
    Then he sells for 6070:
    958
He buys it back for 6516:
    -5558
And sells it again for 7555:
    1997

    Sooo, I put 1997 :)

    ReplyDelete
  90. I put 1997 , too!So,I agree with the Anonymous 97.

    ReplyDelete
  91. I put down 1551, my sister is really good at math and that's what she got so we both put that as the answer. I'm sure my sister is right, sooo.. she did all the steps. so 1997 is wrong. :D
better luck next time to everyone who put 1997!

    ReplyDelete
  92. im rly good at maths aswell, and i got 1997. i got a 1:1 degree for my Phd and im pretty sure im not wrong. if i am... oh dear. But im not.

    ReplyDelete
  93. So,let's just hope we get the right answer , guys!

    ReplyDelete
  94. The answer is CLEARLY 1997, all of you with a different answer are WRONG. I will laugh in your face when the answer is revealed to be 1997. :) Good day!

    ReplyDelete
  95. LennyC solver hasn't put up the mystery pic yet...

    ReplyDelete
  96. The answer is 1551 heres why: He pays 5512 so heas at negative 5512. Then he sells for 6070 so now his profit is 958. He lost 446 so 958 minus 446 is 512. Then he buys it back for 6516 and then sells it for 7555 so his profit their is 1039 so 1039+512=1551!!!
    Equation: (6070-5112=958-446=512)+(7555-6516=1039) 1039+446=1551!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. - 5,112
    + 6,070
    - 6,516
    + 7,555
    -------
    = 1,997

They only said 446 as it is the difference between 6,516 and 6,070. They only said it to trick some people, and I can see that it clearly did.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I know 1997 is right heres why: He pays 5512 NP so hes at -5512 then he sells for 6070 so he has 958. Then he buys it back for 6516 so 958-6518=-5560 then he sells for 7555 so -5560+7555=1997. I wrote the comment above sorry I was wrong.

    ReplyDelete
  99. lol I scored a 800 on the math sat but I got this problem wrong... fudging dumb trick questions.. and yeah its' 1551, man i gotta be careful

    ReplyDelete
  100. i put 1997 but my friends all said it's 1551 so yeah

    ReplyDelete
  101. I got 1997.
    6070-5112= 958 (profit)
    958-6516= -5558
    -5558+7555= 1997

    ReplyDelete
  102. i got 1551 i did 6070-5112= 958 so he was up that much then he bought it back for 6516 so he lost the 446 np but was still up 512 np i think is what i had... so he basically like rented the petpet for that, then i did the 7555-6516= 1039 and that was his profit from that sale and i added the 512 profit from his previous sale and got the 1551

    ReplyDelete
  103. BRING IT ON!!!!!!!!
    i say its 1997

    ReplyDelete
  104. It is definitely 1997. All of you putting 1551 are calculating the 446 loss twice! I agree with the above post: the 446 was put there to trick people and it clearly did! I LOL at all of the people putting 1551!

THE ANSWER IS !997! ONLY TWO MORE DAYS UNTIL IT IS PROVEN!

    ReplyDelete
  105. obviously 1997, am i right?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I bought my pet for 5112, I'm happy with it.
    I sell it for 6070, I get a profit of 958.
    I buy it back for 6516 (958 - 6516 = -5558) (loss)
    I sell it for 7555 (-5558 + 7555 = 1997)

1551 is just complicating things....think of it as simple buying and selling

    ReplyDelete
  107. 6,070 - 5112 = 958. that is his FIRST profit.
    6,516 - 6,070 = 446. that is his LOSS.
    7,555 - 6,516 = 1039. that is his SECOND profit.

add the first and second profit together = 1997.
but since he had a LOSS, you subtract 446 = 1551.

    it's that simple.

    ReplyDelete
  108. .. .. .. .. 1997 ... .... ...

    ReplyDelete
  109. I didn't know about this blog and now that i read this i realize that i don't even remember my answer... ahh D:

    ReplyDelete
  110. Be careful of the word "so".

    ReplyDelete
  111. 1 MORE DAY!I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IF THE ANSWER IS 1997!I PUT 1997!HIGH-FIVE EVERYONE WHO PUT 1997!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  112. Ok. Let's go through step by step.

They buys a kepru for 5112NP.
    = -5112

They sell it for 6070 and buys it back for 6516 causing them to lose 446NP. Which means the buying and the selling together equals to a loss of 446.
    -5112-446= -5558

Then, they sell it again for 7555NP. So they gain 7555NP.
    -5558+7555= 1997

    ReplyDelete
  113. RIGHT ANSWER= 1551!!
    Proof:

First Transaction leaves him with: 5112

Second Transaction leaves him With 958
    (He paid 5112 and got 6070: 6070-5112= 958)

Third Transaction leaves him with: 512
(He had a profit of 958 and lost 446.(6516-6070))

He now has a profit of 512.

    Fourth Transaction GAINS: 1039
    (Going from 6516 to 7555 = a 1039 NP profit.)

Profit of 512 + the profit of the fourth transaction (1039)

    512 + 1039 = 1551.

    ReplyDelete
  114. ^^^ First transaction leaves him with NEGATIVE 5112. I'm sorry I forgot the -

    ReplyDelete
  115. TOTAL PROFIT INCLUDES LOSSES.
